The goal of slot efficiency is of maximising the amount of slot switches that can be made while not violating a set of predefined constraints. However, they'll need to improve their scoring on the perimeter to maintain their top-of-the-line performance.

The slot is the ideal option for wide receivers who are fast, as they can get open more quickly when their route will not be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list who can benefit from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

The last spot on the list is populated by possession-based receivers that are more effective on intermediate and short routes than in deep areas like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a solid option to be a sleeper for this season, as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to play on more downfield targets. Hamler will thrive on more short-to-middle and intermediate routes, as it was where he excelled when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.

Percentage of Snaps in the Slot

The percentage of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. However, it isn't always a reliable indicator of a receiver's abilities because some receivers excel in the slot, but can't play deep and vice versa.

Alshon Jeffrey, as an example leads the league in goals per game (4.8) however, he is only ranked 6th when it comes to the position that scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets come from the outside, and it's hard to score a first-down on a wide-open, deep route in that situation.

Some receivers are better at playing inside, while others struggle to do so on the outside. Robby Anderson, for instance, was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He logged 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to only 26% on boundary routes. This is an enormous difference that shows how much more productive Anderson is when aligned to the slot.

Additionally, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a master in one-on-1 coverage.

Speed receivers are more effective when they align inside. They can be targeted further down the field and are often faced with one-on-1 coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.

McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also part of this group. Both have been able to create pressures in the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles. Moore having the highest tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by using his slot for nickel and dime packages, Rain Bet and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. In addition, Moore's capability to stop big run plays has been an enormous asset when playing in the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. Wide receivers with an excellent slot grade score touchdowns in the same way as those on the outside. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers.

It's interesting to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. He's actually running more routes in the slot than many of the players on this list. This is an excellent opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is the top-rated receiver in our system.

Lamb also plays at the X-position and makes huge plays on the outside. Lamb isn't nearly as explosive as the players in this ranking however, he's a very high-graded receiver and is a great player for the Cowboys' scheme.

Mecole Hardman, a player who puts huge numbers with both types of targets, is another example. He has a high slot receiver grade and is among the league's top players at catching back-shoulder throws however, he's also a formidable player for contested-catch.

Another player on this list that's a slot specialist in the true sense is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton who has been positioned in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks aligned in the slot, which makes him an important player in the defense of his team. On the contrary, he's been unable to block passes from the outside and has given an unfavorable EPA against these types of targets. This is because he's playing with linebackers and safety players who aren't able to compete with Hilton's speed, size, and route-running abilities.
